The 4 C’s of Diamonds

You’ve probably heard of the 4 C’s: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. They’re the standard way diamonds are graded, but here’s what’s important to know: they don’t all carry equal weight.

 CUT

THE ONE I CARE ABOUT MOST

Cut is what gives a diamond its sparkle, brilliance, and overall beauty and the most important of the 4 C’s.

A diamond can have incredible color and clarity grades, but if it’s poorly cut, it can still look dull, dark, or lifeless. Proportions, symmetry, facet structure, and how the diamond handles light all play a role in how beautiful it looks in person.

And this is exactly why I hand-select diamonds for my clients. A grading report can tell you a lot about a diamond, but it can’t tell you everything. Two diamonds with nearly identical specs on paper can look completely different in real life. Knowing what to look for (and what to avoid) is where experience matters.

 COLOR

HOW WHITE DOES IT LOOK?

Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow or brown). The higher the grade, the less visible color the diamond has.

But you don’t necessarily need the highest color grade to have a beautiful diamond. The shape of the stone, the metal you’re setting it in, and your personal preference all matter. The goal is choosing a color that looks beautiful, not simply paying for the highest letter on the report.

CLARITY

WHAT’S GOING ON INSIDE THE DIAMOND?

Clarity refers to the natural characteristics, or inclusions, within a diamond. Grades range from Flawless (FL) to Included (I).

Here’s what you need to know: higher clarity doesn’t automatically mean a more beautiful diamond. I focus on finding stones that are visually clean to the eye without having you pay for a clarity grade you may never actually see.

CARAT

THE SIZE EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT

Carat measures a diamond’s weight, not necessarily how large it looks.

Two diamonds with the exact same carat weight can face up very differently depending on their shape and proportions. This is another reason I don’t shop by the numbers alone. I’m looking at how that diamond actually presents on the hand.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The 4 C’s are a great starting point, but a diamond is more than its grading report.

My job is to look beyond the numbers and source diamonds that are beautifully cut, visually stunning, and worth what you’re spending. Because you shouldn’t have to become a diamond expert to buy a great diamond.

That’s what you have me for.
